flash magazine, australia '01 If someone just listened to your music and knew nothing about you, do you think they would have a pretty good idea of who you are? i'd like to think so, although i'm not at all certain what other people pick up on when they're listening- i mean, some people don't listen deeply to music OR things people say. but if you're asking whether i think that people could "know" me through the music, i'd say they'd be in the ballpark with any kind of psychological profile that they came up with! i think the experience of our music is quite subjective. then again, any finished work is an idealized state- a utopian wish for perfection. no one really is that way, or we wouldn't need art. what do you guys find beauty in? fellini's 'juliet of the spirits', conversations with friends, tropical fish- there's so much! what has inspired you (shows, albums, etc) for you guys to form the band? mostly great movies, but also personal experiences with 'coincidence', telepathy, and 'chance'. lately, the disintegration of US politics. what is something you learned the hard way? no one 'deserves' ANYTHING. nobody gets more out of life than anyone else. we're all the same in the end. what are you guys striving for? chances to create experience. a unique sonic and cultural identity. the opportunity to share perspective. strangest experiences? uh....? what are you guys listening to? what do you think about the current state of indie music? blue oyster cult.
do you think pure sound is an endless inspiration for the band? yes. albums are about listening; the sense of hearing. stomachs rumbling or vocal harmonies- whatever it takes. how does the creative process work for you guys? Do you think music and style go hand in hand? the creative process can move quickly, but the process of turning that into 'consumer products' always moves slowly. yes, i do think music and style can go hand in hand- music is your sonic style. we're interested in being interesting/entertaining on all levels, so a strong visual sense is important too. our style is just a reflection of experience. whats next? next will be: writing and recording a new album (tentatively titled BLACK DOTS SHIFT), constantly updating our website; which, to us, isn't just an online ad for the band, it's another way to get our ideas out. finally, how did you like playing with wire? playing with WIRE was totally great- it's an honor to be aligned with a band with so much history, substance, influence and enthusiasm for new ideas. |
